  • Facing Left: Jason Moran Trio

On my sophomore recording I choose the smaller setting of a trio. I'd been performing a lot with Nasheet and Tarus and I wanted to document our work. Each of us had a hand in the arrangement of the compositions. These arrangements were developed largely on the bandstand. By the time we entered the studio, most of the arrangements were set. Another One, Wig Wise, and Battle of the Cattle Acts were not. On Another One we switched from trading fours (between the drums and piano) to trading musical ideas, regardless of the measures. That is a prime example our brand of loosening up the stereo typical trio form. During the actual recording, we are still striving to expand our responses to one another and the music happening AT THAT MOMENT.
The music on this record is a fusion of all of my influences. I have reworked two pieces by Duke Ellington, Later and Wig Wise. (Two pieces I performed in a concert in tribute to Duke Ellington. It was a celebration of his music that also included the artistry of Muhal Richard Abrams, Andrew Hill, Randy Weston, Geri Allen, and John Hicks. NYC 12/99) Joga, is a piece written by the Icelandic songstress, Bjork. Two pieces are taken from famous films: Murder of Don Fanucci, from Coppola's Godfather Pt.II, and Yojimbo from the Kurosawa'sYojimbo. Tarus Mateen is the composer of Another One, a piece that has become a theme song for the trio. Twelve was written by my late teacher Jaki Byard. notes on compositions

  • Soundtrack to Human Motion: Jason Moran [review]

Soundtrack was my debut solo recording. Fortunately, I had some studio experience. And one of the lessons I learned was SELECT THE RIGHT MUSICIANS. I liked their personalities and I had recorded with each of them before.I like to feel socially and musically at ease in the studio.
The title, Soundtrack to Human Motion, I got from the phrase "Soundtrack to the Motion Picture." But, the music is not about a "movie", this is about my life . About a person going through life. Human Motions. This is the sound track to human motion.

From Yuri Moran's (my brother) liner notes: Par Brassai, a photographer famous for capturing Parisian night life, once said "I think everyday life and what happens is the real life, my greatest ambition is to make something new and striking out of the banal and ordinary, to show everyday life in such a way as to make it seem as though it is seen by the eyes for the first time."
Jason Moran has assembled ten original compositions and set them in motion. Human motion if you will, walking instinctively down the paths of rhythm, living and breathing, moving to life's constant struggle. In his own words: "The concept of this record was to create a soundtrack to my daily life. A life that is steadily shifting directions that put me in motion. This collection of music attempts to capture the 'man on the move.'"
Pieces such as "Snake Stance", which is a Kung Fu fighting style, allows the soloist to "slither" through a "jungle" of sound. "JAMO Meets SAMO" was inspired by the paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat. "Retrograde" is created from an Andrew Hill piece playing backwards on my record player. You never know where you'll find inspiration.
Indeed, out of the seemingly ordinary landscape of life, Jason Moran has created bold statements eloquently put in song. Mr. Moran's playing can be in your face, boiling over with aggression, and at other times sing subtlty in the background. Hopefully you'll be able to take elements of this album as nuggets of truth, and apply them to your own 'human motion'. notes on compositions

    Further Ado: Greg osby

After joining Greg Osby's band in October of 1996, we went into the studio early in 1997. This was my first time in a professional studio. Greg gave me the music a couple of weeks before the recording, and I practiced rigorously until I felt somewhat comfortable on his music. After learning the written material, the next task is to find out the format of the improvisations. But in his band, he won't tell you the improvisational format until you get into the studio. Therefore, the improvisations are truly improvisations. On this recording, I was in the early stages of ridding myself of the chains that bound myself to other pianists. Greg's constant encouragement made me feel like I could "go for it". I remember the first tour I did with him, he said to me, " I'm trying to approach the saxophone as if it were a piano. A pianist can play in all registers of the keyboard at ease. On the saxophone, it's very difficult, but I want to make it sound as fluid as a linear scale." After hearing him say this, I knew that I wasn't taking full advantage of everything a pianist can do. Meanwhile, Jaki Byard was also showing me exercises that would allow me to widen the interval ranges in my improvisations. So, this recording marks the work that I had done on that subject.
